WHAT'S NEW

COMPUTERIZED DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY OF THE EYE

Dr. Valella is now able to take computerized digital photographs of the exterior and interior of her patient's eyes and analyze them for disease, document for future comparison and show her patients the same things she sees when she examines their eyes. "This is a great way to educate my patients on what is happening with their sight. They get to see exactly the same thing I am looking at on the computer monitor."

The technology gives the doctor a detailed view of the eye that is more convenient for both the patient and doctor than traditional methods. This technology is particularly useful for patients with diabetes, hypertension, arteriosclerosis, glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, tumors, injury, infection, surgery and contact lenses, but is also great for documenting any changes in the eye health.

NEW GLAUCOMA TECHNOLOGY

A new laser technology, which may revolutionize the early diagnosis of glaucoma, is now available in our office.

The new laser instrument is called the Heidleberg Retina Tomograph or HRT. The instrument scans the optic nerve and uses special software to evaluate the nerve's size, depth and shape for defects and change. It takes just a few minutes, is painless and does not require eye drops. A print out is given to the doctor to review the results.

This technology is especially valuable for early diagnosis of glaucoma and to measure results of treatment. Glaucoma may affect anyone. Factors that increase your risk include: increasing age, African-American heritage, high blood pressure, family history, diabetes, nearsightedness, long-term steroid treatment, injury or trauma to the eye.

NEW VISUAL FIELD TESTING

We have updated our visual field testing equipment with new technology and software to make your screening faster and easier than before. The new system can also do more extensive peripheral vision testing to investigate glaucoma, tumors, strokes or other neurological and visual conditions.

NEW INSTRUMENT TO MEASURE EYE PRESSURE

Baush & Lomb has developed a new instrument called the Proview, which allows Dr. Valella's glaucoma patients to measure their own eye pressure at home much like keeping track of blood pressure for hypertension. This allows a more accurate way for her to assess if treatment is effective. She also uses the instrument on patients who do not tolerate the traditional method because this measurement is performed through the eyelid.
